RESOLUTION DECLARING AUGUST 6-12, 2023
SACRAMENTO COUNTY FARMERS’ MARKET WEEK

WHEREAS, farmers and ranchers provide citizens with access to healthy, local, and regional foods through farmers’ markets, which have expanded and evolved to accommodate the demand for a diverse array of agricultural products; and

WHEREAS, farmers’ markets and other direct agricultural marketing outlets provide infrastructure to assist in the distribution of farm products, thereby contributing approximately $9 billion each year to the U.S. economy; and

WHEREAS, farmers’ markets serve as significant outlets by which small-to-medium, new and veteran agricultural producers market agricultural products, generating revenue that supports the sustainability of family farms and the revitalization of agricultural communities nationwide; and

WHEREAS, the County of Sacramento recognizes the importance of expanding agricultural marketing opportunities that assist and encourage the next generation of farmers and ranchers, the importance of generating farm income to help stimulate business development and job creation, and wants to continue building community connections through rural and urban linkages; and

WHEREAS, farmers’ markets in the County of Sacramento provide local entrepreneurs with the opportunity to start successful new food businesses and reach customers with their value-added products, stimulating local economic development; and

WHEREAS, regional Sacramento farmers’ markets continue to make strides toward equitable food access, providing CalFresh/EBT acceptance and nutrition incentives and thereby enabling food-insecure households to enjoy nutritious fresh produce while supporting local producers; and

WHEREAS, the County of Sacramento celebrates the role of farmers’ markets in building strong, healthy communities in which neighbors meet, interact, and strengthen social ties.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors, County of Sacramento, State of California, hereby proclaims the week of August 6-12, 2023, as Sacramento County Farmers’ Market Week, in conjunction with the observance of National Farmers’ Market Week, and calls upon Sacramento County citizens to come out, raise awareness of these farmers contributions, and celebrate their local farmers markets.
