From 2009 to 2014, government assistance known nationally as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) redemptions at farmers markets have grown by 350 percent. Locally, it is estimated that up to 200,000 CalFresh-eligible households in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, and Nevada Counties may benefit from this work!
Thanks to a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Alchemist CDC, the Health Education Council, and Public Health Institute Center for Wellness & Nutrition have partnered to enable regional farmers markets to accept CalFresh EBT benefits in order to increase low-income families’ access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The work locally is part of a USDA-wide effort to strengthen local and regional food systems and increase access to fruits and vegetables.
