Volunteer Manager
Full-time (Sacramento, CA)

Expected Hourly Commitment: 40 hours/week, non-exempt

Compensation: $30.81/hour, non-negotiable

Schedule: Schedule to be determined with supervisor and will include either Saturday or Sunday. Some telework is available with manager approval.

Location: Some telecommuting is possible with manager approval. Work across any of the programs’ sites will be required as needed (Alchemist CDC farmers’ markets, community
spaces, kitchen facilities, Alchemist Public Market). Office location is Sutter Square Galleria Center at 2901 K Street, Suite 302, Sacramento, CA 95816.

Position Overview: 

Under the guidance of the Director of Food Access, the Volunteer Manager provides essential volunteer recruitment, training and management for all Alchemist CDC volunteers. Volunteers are the bridge between Alchemist CDC’s mission to connect communities with land, food, and opportunity and the tangible results we strive to achieve. We have a growing volunteer base of over 300 volunteers who serve an average of over 800 hours a month. This role supports all Alchemist CDC Departments. This includes being an advocate for volunteers throughout the organization, working with every level of staff to identify how they can engage volunteers. Supports departments with recruiting, onboarding, and management of volunteers. The Manager reports to the Food Access Director and provides direct support to the Food Access, Economic Development, Advancement, and Administrative Departments. Success in this position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, patient and diplomatic interpersonal skills, and a commitment to improving food access and economic development to underserved communities.     Key Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies
    • Provide support and guidance to volunteers to ensure their success
    • Coordinate and lead volunteer orientation and training programs
    • Evaluate and report on the success of volunteer programs and initiatives
    • Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation, compliance, and hours with GetConnected by Galaxy
    • Serve as the organization’s key advocate for volunteer opportunities across all departments
    • Maintain and manage relationships with CSU Sacramento, UC Davis College Corps, and other similar internship programs as appropriate
    • Expand corporate volunteer program
    • Develop and maintain volunteer management best practices
    • Identify and address any challenges faced by volunteers or the program
    • Work with departments to identify opportunities for volunteer engagement
    • Develop and manage the volunteer budget

       

      Position Overview:  

    • High level of proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel
    • Proficient with the following software and platforms:
    • Google Suite, including: Gmail, Google Sheets/Docs, Google Voice, Google Meet, Google Calendar, Zoom, Canva, Adobe Acrobat Pro, X, Pro DC or equivalent PDF editor
    • Strong attention to detail, great organizational skills and superior follow up skills
    • Excellent time management skills
    • High level of professionalism
    • Proficiency in volunteer management software
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills for emails, reports and professional interactions
    • Ability to take initiative and see projects and tasks through to completion.
    • Must be self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision, and manage multiple priorities
    • Experience with recruiting, training, and managing new staff or volunteers
    • Experience working with diverse communities; knowledge of local demographics and resources
    • Knowledge of volunteer management best practices and trends
    • Consistently meets deadlines and arrives on time for scheduled shifts

      Desirable Qualifications, but not required:

    • Demonstrated experience and competency (professional/volunteer/formal education) in a related field (such as CalFresh/EBT, farmers’ market operations, food systems, economic development, restaurant operations)

    • Strong customer service background

    • Experience with Canva, content creation, and social media engagement

    • Five or more years of volunteer management experience

    • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply (especially those who speak Spanish, Dari/Farsi, Pashto, Vietnamese or Chinese [Cantonese/Mandarin/Toisan])

    • Familiarity with program/project development or coordination

    • Familiarity with the Sacramento region’s geography and demographics

    • Familiarity with non-profit work environments
