Commercial Kitchen Coordinator – Job Description

Half-time: 20 hours/week

Compensation: Pay rate: $20/hour. This position receives 10 paid holidays and accrues ~60 hours of PTO/year and ~20 hours sick leave/year.

Alchemist CDC, a Sacramento nonprofit, is seeking a 20 hour/week Commercial Kitchen Coordinator to manage the physical Alchemist Kitchen- a shared-use kitchen for small food producers in Sacramento. Alchemist Kitchen primarily serves food entrepreneurs who have participated in Alchemist CDC’s food incubator programs (Alchemist Microenterprise Academy and the Alchemist Kitchen Incubator Program), as well as entrepreneurs from the general public. Consistent with Alchemist CDC’s nonprofit mission, our target kitchen users are food entrepreneurs from low-income backgrounds or under-resourced communities.

The Commercial Kitchen Coordinator will report to the Alchemist Kitchen Program Manager and be responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of the kitchen. The Commercial Kitchen Coordinator position will enforce procedures and rules to make sure the kitchen is maintained and the space is ready for all users coming in. This requires holding kitchen users accountable and a firm but fair demeanor. Applicant must have the ability to complete janitorial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, reach equipment stored in high places, and move kitchen equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Work will be done primarily on-site at the Alchemist Kitchen (882 El Camino, Sacramento, CA 95818). Schedule is generally 5 days a week (including both weekend days) for 4 hours per day, however, times are flexible within normal business hours (9am-5pm). There is the potential for this position to grow into a larger role with our future planned project, Alchemist Public Market ( when constructed. This position receives 10 paid holidays and accrues ~60 hours of PTO/year and ~20 hours sick leave/year.

To avoid any potential conflict of interest, this position is not open to any active Alchemist Kitchen program participants (AMA/AKIP), nor any Alchemist CDC board members or steering committee members, and the Commercial Kitchen Coordinator cannot operate a food business out of Alchemist Kitchen, nor use the Alchemist Kitchen site for any business operations that are not part of their job duties.

Job Responsibilities (approximate percent of role):

  • Regular janitorial and maintenance duties to keep kitchen clean and operational (40%)
  • Enforce kitchen rental and usage guidelines (20%)
  • Keeping kitchen properly stocked (10%)
  • Ensuring adherence to food safety and usage guidelines for the kitchen (10%)
  • Monitor scheduling of shared-use kitchen using The Food Corridor platform (10%)
  • Field inquiries from interested potential users and onboard new members (10%)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment
  • Reliable and able to work independently
  • Proficient with general computer skills including scanning documents and saving to Dropbox, use of Excel for tracking task completion, familiarity with Google Docs/Sheets, ability to quickly become proficient with platforms such as Asana and The Food Corridor
  • Reliable verifiable transportation
  • ServSafe Manager’s Level certified preferred, we will provide testing for certification otherwise
